![]() If you have no APHE available and your gun is too small to fire effective HE shells against tanks, AP ammo is your next best bet. Whether to use these or not depends entirely on what other ammo you have available. AP-type shells without explosive filler (black explosion instead of red, see above) often have an advantage in penetration power over APHE-type ammunition, but because they don't explode after penetration, their damage potential is much lower. as backup against vehicles with thin or no armour, or an open top. ![]() SH (shrapnel) shells are best used like HE shells under 100mm gun caliber. Especially the 122mm and 152mm Soviet guns are powerful enough to knock out a large variety of targets as long as you place your shots right. HE shells on guns of ~100mm and larger are actually powerful enough to serve as your standard ammo in place of APHE depending on what else is driving around with you. Meanwhile, HE just explodes on impact, and the rest depends on where you hit the target. APHE and solid AP shot tend to have problems against these, because the APHE fuse doesn't go off correctly (there's a minimum thickness of armour it has to punch through to trigger), or a solid AP shot punches straight through without fragmenting much. HE shells on guns smaller than ~100mm caliber are best used as backup against lightly armoured or unarmoured, as well as open-top targets (like an AA tank, an M18 Hellcat etc.). Other ammo types are best used as a supplement to APHE ammo. The reason you'll want these as your standard ammo is that they normally combine the best damage potential of all AP shells with decent to good penetration power, so they're the most reliable at taking out targets quickly. If you're looking at the picture of an AP shell and see a red explosion in it (instead of a black one), then you're looking at an APHE-type ammo.
